PEC
conference memorable
By all accounts, the NSP's
2012 Patroller Education Conference at Copper Mountain,
Colo., was a great success, with the highest attendance
ever, the most educational offerings, and 19 NSP
sponsors.
Over three days, patrollers from
around the country got an opportunity to learn low angle
rescue, navigational techniques with a GPS, lift
evacuation from Petzl (including climbing a lift tower
and riding the line), and avalanche rescue. There were
numerous toboggan and OEC clinics that enabled
patrollers to polish their core skills, and interesting
guest speakers, including Dana Jordan of Cascade Rescue
(who also helped teach a toboggan clinic), former Vail
patroller and climber extraordinaire Eric Alexander, and
Copper doctor and altitude researcher Phil Freedman. The
culminating day saw the ever-popular Patroller
Challenge, which had its most competitive field ever,
with 11 teams. Team PUHA (Pick Up and Haul Ass) from
Willamette Pass, Ore., consisting of Sarah Aiken, Cyndy
Meno, and Kevin Vogt, took home top honors, improving on
their second place finish in 2010.
We could not
have had a successful PEC without the dedication and
hard work of our national program directors and
volunteer leadership, as well as the invaluable
assistance of the Rocky Mountain Division and Copper
Mountain Ski Patrol. Thank you all for your assistance
in making this the best PEC yet.
Look for a full
article on PEC 2012 in the summer issue of Ski
Patrol Magazine. In the meantime, take a
look at these photos from the conference, shot by NSP Communications Director
Candace Horgan.

A
Message from Education Director Darcy Hanley
The
ski season is over for many NSP patrollers, so it is
important to reflect on the many accomplishments of our
members this season. Congratulations to all of those who
went from alpine candidate to patroller/alpine
patroller, those who earned their Certified number, the
countless hours spent by volunteers to roll out the
Outdoor Emergency Care Fifth Edition, the
leadership of our national program directors, and those
who became Senior patrollers.
The
Young Adult Program has provided a leadership pathway
found on the NSP website. Kyle Blaedow (son of Certified
patroller Anne Blaedow) is working toward becoming an
Eagle Scout by constructing shelters at Sunburst Ski
Patrol in Kewaskum, Wis. This involved over 380 hours of
planning and construction. These young adults are the
future of the NSP.
PEC
2012 was accomplished despite a light snowpack, and was
a success because of the incredible effort of the
instructors in each program. The Patroller Challenge
proclaimed a new winner, Team PUHA from the Pacific
Northwest Division!
The
NSP Education Department turns to a new season with the
release of the new Mountain Travel and Rescue
Manual, OEC Refresher B Worksbook,
chapters 1 and 2 of the Transportation Video, a new
national Certified Program director, OEC online hybrid
course, and a Senior S&T manual. The NSP Safety Team
has an initiated the Lead by Example program, which
recognizes safety across the snowsports industry.
Let
me know how we can assist your area/patrol to plan for
the new season.
