What is Critical Incident Stress Management?

Interventions that are designed to:

  • Help people who experience trauma to better understand what they saw, heard and are feeling.
  • Reduce the incidence of behavioral, emotional, or cognitive dysfunction as the result of a traumatic experience.
  • Reduce the need for an individual to become a recipient of mental health services.

What is a critical incident?

Examples include line of duty death, death/ trauma of a child, mass casualty incident/ disaster, prolonged extrication effort, suicide, use of deadly force, trauma to someone you know, several incidents over a short period of time.
